Student Guild

Student representation is an essential part of guaranteeing a great student experience for everyone.

Student Guild

The Student Guild is the official representative body for all LSBM students. It is funded by an annual grant from LSBM, but operates completely independently. It provides impartial advice and guidance to students, raises student concerns with LSBM staff and works collaboratively with the LSBM management and leadership team to give students the best student experience possible.

The prestigious 'Independent Higher Education Annual Conference' took place on 27/28 Nov 2017. This annual conference was a chance for leading academics and thinkers across the higher education spectrum to come together and discuss best practice, network and celebrate outstanding academic endeavour in the independent sector.

We were therefore extremely proud and excited for LSBM to win the 'Excellence in Student Community' Award that was announced at the conference.

The citation for the award was as follows:

"The Excellence in Student Community Award, sponsored by The Student Engagement Partnership (TSEP), went to the London School of Business and Management for the work of their Student Guild, Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) project and anti-extremism Encourage programme."

About the LSBM Student Guild

The Student Guild is led by the Student President, who is elected each year by the entire student body. The Student President is assisted by the Past President who retains a role in the leadership of the Guild so that the knowledge and insights they gained during their term of office can be passed on. In April each year a Student President-Elect is elected.

The Student-President-Elect spends a number of months preparing for the role of President by shadowing the incumbent President, and they formally take up office in the September following their election.

For the academic year 2016-17 (until September 2017), the Student President was Julian Owusu. Julian is a former Ghana U17 International Professional footballer who joined LSBM as a student in September 2015, and who resumed his studies in October 2017 and is now supporting the new President as a Peer Advisor. (You can see a picture and read a leaving statement from Julian here).

The current Student President for 2017/18 is Delon Jones.

Delon is a law student who aspires to become a Human Rights lawyer, helping to tackle social inequalities and raise awareness of systemic injustices.

He is also the host of 'Delon's Discussions' on LSBM Radio.

On Mon 10 April 2017, there was a vote to elect the Student President-Elect (previously called 'Student Vice-President'), who shadowed Julian through to September 2017, before officially taking over as the new President for 2017/18 after that time.

(The winner of the original vote in April 2017 was Abul Hashem who beat Delon Jones by 198 votes to 166 (details here). Abul had to withdraw from the post for personal reasons, and Delon Jones was confirmed as the winner of the election.)

While the Student Guild is led by the Student President, it is managed by the Student Guild Manager. In November 2017 Omosola Fiberesima (who prefers to be called Shola) was appointed as the new Student Guild Manager at LSBM.

Her main focus is on ensuring that the strategic priorities set by the student body are delivered and that the system of student representation is healthy and thriving.

You can read a statement from Shola here setting out her background, experience and enthusiasm for the role.
