LSBM Wins 'Excellence in Student Community' Award!

05 Dec 2017

The prestigious 'Independent Higher Education Annual Conference' took place on 27/28 Nov 2017. This annual conference was a chance for leading academics and thinkers across the higher education spectrum to come together and discuss best practice, network and celebrate outstanding academic endeavour in the independent sector.

We were therefore extremely proud and excited for LSBM to win the 'Excellence in Student Community' Award that was announced at the conference.

The citation for the award was as follows:

"The Excellence in Student Community Award, sponsored by The Student Engagement Partnership (TSEP), went to the London School of Business and Management for the work of their Student Guild, Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) project and anti-extremism Encourage programme."

Cal Courtney, Director, Centre for Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Success (SEWS) at LSBM (pictured on the left accepting the award from Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive of the Office for Students, standing next to Mark Leach, the founder and Editor of Wonkhe who is pictured in the centre) had this to say about winning the award:

"This is an award for all staff and students who work together to create a really vibrant student community at LSBM. We should all be delighted and congratulate ourselves on this great achievement."

This award recognises the important part that building a student community through our Student Guild and support staff has played at LSBM, and the high-value that we place on the work of our Student President, PALS and the STAR representatives who support him.

Our Student Guild was founded on the principles of spreading a message of friendship, excellence and support through everything that we do.

Many thanks must go to former Student President Julian Owusu, who helped to setup the LSBM Student Guild alongside Faisa Warsama, our Student Guild Manager during those formative months. Current Student President Delon Jones and Student Guild Manager, Shola Fiberesima who are now actively building on that great legacy.

The Five Pillars of LSBMs 'Excellence in Student Community' Award-Winning Success

There were five criteria that the award was judged upon, and which LSBM had to demonstrate in order to win, as follows:

  • Building a strong student community that enhances students’ sense of belonging and supports student retention and success.
  • Creates meaningful and innovative interactions within the student community and between the student and staff community
  • Fosters a partnership with students in creating their own student community
  • Empowers students to shape their own learning experience
  • Innovates in advancing equality and diversity at their institution

Our Deputy Academic Principal, Nick Hillman (pictured on the right) had this to say about the unique benefits of studying at LSBM:

“LSBM is an innovative, exciting and unique place to work and study. I joined in May 2014, having worked within the higher education sector for over 20 years, the majority of that time in large public universities, Anglia Ruskin and King's College London. As a small, personal higher education institution we can deliver validated degrees that are designed to best allow our students to succeed to their full potential. Our outstanding Quality Assurance Agency annual monitoring report and National Student Survey results are testament to the high-standards, quality of teaching and levels of support that we provide throughout all we do at LSBM.”

The current Student President Delon Jones (pictured second from the right) had this to say about the win.

"I am enormously proud to be the Student President leading such a forward-thinking Student Guild, and am proud that LSBM has won the 'Excellence in Student Community' award. This recognises what a great place LSBM is to study and enjoy with supportive friends. It is my aim to build on the great work that has already been done at LSBM and take the student community at LSBM to even greater heights."

We look forward to building on this legacy of success.
