Carol Husband, Member Engagement Manager for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) visited LSBM yesterday to talk about the benefits of membership.

CMI is a leading chartered professional body in the area of management and leadership. It was founded in 1947 and gained its Royal Charter in 2002. It has over 130,000 members and 35,000 students, and has the aim of eliminating 'accidental managers' by providing:

  • Additional Qualifications
  • Professional Recognition
  • Access to the latest research and thinking
  • Access to events and networking opportunities

The core message of the CMI is that leading and managing people is a skill that can be learned.

Carol claimed that CMI research indicated that 44% of line managers in the UK are ineffective, and that:

  • 75% of employers believe more graduates should pursue professional qualifications since these provide evidence of practical skills.
  • Communication Skills (which is a key skill area that CMI focuses on) were rated more highly by people in the workplace as a trait of leadership, than Team Skills, Problems Solving Skills and even the ability to Motivate Others, in a CMI 21st Century Leaders research survey.
  • 90% of managers said that a qualification improved their management and leadership performance, with most (81%) able to assist colleagues with this new knowledge and 70% saying that a CMI course helped to improve the performance of their team
