LSBM Becomes a Disability Confident Employer

10 Aug 2017

LSBM was proud to announce last August that we had become 'Disability Confident Committed'. LSBM have now taken the next step in our commitment to the aims of the Disability Confident scheme by taking additional steps to become a 'Disability Confident Employer'.

Disability Confident is a government scheme that has the following four main aims and objectives:

  • Challenge attitudes towards disability
  • Increase the understanding of disability
  • Remove barriers to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions in employment
  • Ensure that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfill their potential and realise their aspirations

The scheme itself allows employers to show their commitment to the over 7 million people (17.5%) of working age in the UK who are disabled or have a health condition.

We are pleased to announce today, under a year from that first announcement, that LSBM have now taken the next step in our commitment to the aims of the scheme by taking additional steps to become a Disability Confident Employer.

This means that we have:

  • undertaken and completed the Disability Confident self-assessment
  • are taking all of the core actions to be a Disability Confident Employer
  • are offering at least one action to get the right people for LSBM and at least one action to keep and develop our people.

This is a significant step because it emphasises how seriously LSBM takes the issues that are highlighted by this government campaign, and we are pleased to be able to provide leadership in the higher education space on these key challenges.

We have a dedicated Disability and Wellbeing Advisor, Dr. Konstantina (Nadia) Michail, who works in our Disability Office and is available during office hours to advise staff and students and help them if there are difficulties that can be overcome.

If you would like to talk to Nadia about us being a Disability Confident Employer, or about any other disability or welfare issues, then you can email her at disability@lsbm.ac.uk.
